Brett Favre would have taken the Vikings to the Super
Bowl but with Tarvaris Jackson they have no chance. Brett
could have given the Bears an opportunity to return to
the big game but with Orten and Grossman forget about
it.
Last season Green Bay finished a 47-yard overtime field
goal from the Big Dance and were in position with Favre
to get it done this year but in the hands of Aaron Rogers
this team is a train wreck pulling out of the station.
Meanwhile, with Chad Pennington and Kellen Clemens the
Jets were heading for a better season but in no better
shape than the Vikings or Bears.
Enter #4 and all of a sudden the puzzle looks complete.
At first I didn’t think so but then I took a closer
look at this roster and it became very clear to me why
Favre has risked it all on a 4-12 team. The New York Jets
are a much better team on paper than the Green Bay Packers
First the best offensive guard in Football is blocking
for Brett now in former Steeler Alan Faneca. Next to Faneca
is D'Brickashaw Ferguson the 4th overall selection in
the 2006 NFL Draft and coming into his prime in year three.
Meanwhile on the other side two time Super Bowl winner
Damien Woody is at Right Tackle next to six year veteran
Brandon Moore and with a cherry on top Center Nick Mangold
another 1st round draft choice and a 3 year starter. That’s
an amazing mass of beef protecting Brett.
Next we move to Tight End and what a choice of receivers
last year’s starter Chris Baker, the best Tight
End in this springs draft Dustin Keller and surprise surprise
one of Brett’s favorite targets at Green Bay none
other than 3 Time All Pro Bubba Franks!
Ok if I haven’t convinced you yet let’s move
to the acrobatic Wide Receivers Laveranues Coles and Jerricho
Cotchery. These guys have never had a quarterback as good
as Brett and still have had solid careers. The sky’s
the limit this season.
Still haven’t got you convinced…let’s
move to the backfield. Thomas Jones is a former 1st round
pick who has flashed signs of brilliance with Arizona,
Tampa Bay and now the Jets but he glowed like a super
nova when he led the Chicago Bears to the Super Bowl.
Favre will also be Thomas Jones best quarterback in his
career and with Brett’s passing offense Jones will
return to greatness. Oh and I’m not done yet they
have a Mr. Outside entering his 2nd season Fantasy God
Leon Washington and for good measure a third back Jessie
Chapman who was one of the few bright spots on last year’s
Dolphins.
Now for the icing on the cake 37 year old Man Genius
Eric Mangini and his 3-4 defense bolstered this season
with the acquisition of former 1st round linebacker Calvin
Pace from the Cardinals, 3 time Pro Bowler Kris Jenkins
from the Panthers, and #1 draft pick Defensive End Vernon
Gholston teamed with nine year veteran Shaun Ellis on
the other side.
Yes they have to play New England twice but Mangini plays
his old team tough and with Favre the field has been leveled.
The Jets also get Miami and Buffalo twice, Oakland, KC,
San Francisco, Denver, St. Louis and Cincinnati. I count
10 wins and the playoffs right there and then things could
get very interesting. Yes the Jets were 4-12 last season
but they were also a playoff team two years ago.
Ok that’s my case bolstered by my colleague Paul
Eide who rated the Jets’ with the best free agency
moves in the NFL way back in February and that leads me
to only one conclusion. – Yes Brett and the Jets
can win it all and this former Packer’s fan will
be rooting for him all the way.
